Happy Father’s Day weekend to all the fathers, step-fathers, abuelos, tios, and single mothers pulling double duty. Today, my heart is particularly tender for the daughters and sons who are missing their fathers, and the new parents currently learning what it means to build a legacy.
When I think about my dad, I think riding around in his car. That car was a rolling time capsule. It was the space where we connected, where the outside world faded, and where he introduced me to the musical landscape that ultimately made me the curator I am today.
THE ROADMAP: Father’s Day Live Freestyle
This 60-minute live freestyle set is my love letter to him and his immense musical influence. Operating across a dynamic 83–124 BPM range, I wanted to recreate the feeling of scanning through his radio dials.
We start deep in our roots with traditional, ancestral Afro-Latin rhythms and classic Salsa from The Buena Vista Social Club and El Timba, before smoothly shifting gears into the timeless American rock and soul of Jimi Hendrix, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Isley Brothers, and Chaka Khan. I even left room for the unexpected turns - weaving in Keane, Matchbox Twenty, and Maroon 5 alongside a fire edit by ONDA.
